Spaulding Restoration has a passion for helping homeowners and land owners create positive and resilient landscapes and woodlands through the removal of introduced plants that cause a negative impact on the environment and the incorporation of native flowers and grasses into landscapes. We believe each parcel of land has an important role to play in creating vibrant and vital ecosystems within the greater Midwestern landscape through the restoration of our native ecosystems. We also believe the incorporation of native plants in food production spaces such as home gardens and working farms will lead to healthier and more resilient local food systems .
Local funding opportunities include surveys, cost share for establishing native habitat, invasive plant removal, and conservation practices in farming:
St. Joseph + Marshall County Soil and Water: "Clean Water Indiana Grant that will assist landowners with the cost of invasive plant removal from their woodlands! We are partnering with our neighbors to the north in St. Joseph County SWCD and will be able to help 10 landowners with between 10 and 20 acres of woodlands, and 20 landowners with less than 10 acres."
NRSC- EQIP program: covers the cost of removing invasive plants, cover cropping, native habitat, tree planting, drip irrigation, high tunnels, and MORE!
SICIM: free land surveys for homeowners to understand their property and provide customized plan for improving the native habitat.
Urban Soil and Health: Free soil health evaluation as well as ideas for how to create a more resilient, healthy, and productive farm.
Fish and Wildlife: Working with landowners to share the cost of establishing native habitats tailored to the landowners goals for conservation.
A designed native perennial garden can bring both ecological benefit and beauty to a space.
Transforming lawns into perennial gardens is a great opportunities for ecologically valuable pocket gardens.
Creating native habitat along ponds and streams reduces soil erosion, filters rain water and minimizes habitat attractability for geese.
Creating pollinator habitat amongst production spaces such as vegetable gardens creates symbiotic relationships.
Swapping out common non-native landscape plants such as burning bush, for native alternatives brings positive changes to the home landscape.
(Other suggested bushes to remove include: Honeysuckle, Barberry, Privet, and Rose of Sharron)
